Erie, PA (December 10, 2025) – The police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred Tuesday evening, December 9, at a westside intersection. Authorities reported that the collision was called in at approximately 6:53 p.m. at the intersection of West Eighth Street and Liberty Street.
Initial information provided by police indicates that a 66-year-old man riding a bicycle was struck by a motor vehicle at the intersection. The driver involved did not remain at the scene and left the area before officers arrived. Emergency responders were dispatched promptly and provided care to the bicyclist at the location before transporting him to UPMC Hamot for further treatment. Despite medical intervention, officials confirmed that the bicyclist was pronounced deceased at the hospital at approximately 7:50 p.m. The Erie County Coroner’s Office has not released the victim’s name.
Police stated that they are actively attempting to identify and locate the vehicle involved in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional updates are expected as more information becomes available.
Our deepest condolences are extended to the victim’s family and loved ones as they face this sudden loss.
Hit-and-Run Bicycle Crashes in Pennsylvania
Collisions involving bicycles and motor vehicles are among the most serious roadway incidents because cyclists have minimal physical protection when struck by a larger vehicle. This risk becomes even greater when a driver leaves the scene, as investigators must work without immediate driver statements and may face delays in locating key evidence. Intersections are a frequent site of these crashes due to turning movements, shifting right-of-way patterns, and situations where drivers fail to recognize a cyclist’s presence in time.
Across Pennsylvania and similar urban areas, the primary causes of car, motorcycle, truck, and pedestrian or bicycle crashes typically involve driver inattention, failure to yield, speeding, impairment from alcohol or fatigue, unsafe passing or lane changes, and reduced visibility in nighttime conditions. Mechanical failures such as brake problems or tire blowouts can also contribute, as can roadway hazards like debris, unclear markings, or uneven pavement. In hit-and-run incidents, the decision to flee may stem from panic, lack of insurance, impairment, or fear of consequences, but Pennsylvania law requires drivers to stop after any crash involving injury or death. Leaving the scene can lead to severe criminal penalties once a driver is identified.
Because bicyclists absorb direct impact forces, injuries in these crashes are often catastrophic. The most common injuries include traumatic brain injuries, skull or facial fractures, spinal trauma, internal bleeding, pelvic and limb fractures, chest injuries, and severe soft tissue damage. Many fatal outcomes involve a combination of head injury and internal trauma, particularly when a collision occurs at roadway speeds that allow little chance for avoidance.
When a bicyclist is killed in a traffic collision, surviving family members may have the right to pursue compensation through a wrongful death claim if negligence is established. Damages in these claims often include funeral and burial expenses, medical bills incurred before death, loss of income and future financial support, loss of household services, loss of companionship, and pain and suffering experienced before death when supported by evidence. If the vehicle involved is not located, families may still have options through uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage, depending on the policies available and the facts confirmed through the investigation.
