Matawan, NJ (January 6, 2022) – Around 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning, January 5, a woman was killed in a garbage truck accident in Matawan.
Police confirmed that the accident happened at the intersection of Spring Hill Road and NJ-34 at the parking lot for the Future Pharmacy. A 59-year-old woman was in her vehicle and started to pull out of the pharmacy parking lot when she was struck by a Solterra garbage truck. The driver of the truck tried to stop but was unable to do so in time.
Paramedics, fire crews, and numerous other responders were called to the scene to help those in need. The 59-year-old woman was critically injured in the accident but was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the garbage truck was not hurt and remained at the scene.
Police believe that the accident may have happened due to icy rain in the area. The roadway was blocked at the intersection for some time.
No further details have been released. The investigation into the circumstances of the accident continues.
