Philadelphia, PA (October 6, 2024) – Authorities with the Philadelphia Police Department are investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash that took place on Sunday, October 6.
It happened around 7:00 p.m. along the 3900 block of North Broad Street. Police say a 56-year-old man was crossing the street when he was struck by a car and was pronounced dead a short time later. There is no word yet on his identity. According to police, the suspect involved in the incident fled the area.
Police say the silver front bumper from the fleeing vehicle was recovered at the scene. The bumper, along with cameras near the scene, reportedly helped investigators locate and tow the vehicle. Now, authorities say they’re using surveillance video to try and identify the driver. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact the police in the meantime, as an investigation proceeds.
We extend our deepest condolences to the deceased man’s family.
Pedestrian Accidents in Philadelphia
Regretfully, annual figures for Pennsylvania indicate a rise in the number and severity of pedestrian accidents. In 2016, there were fewer deaths on American roadways but more accidents. Moreover, fatalities from head-on crashes and inattentive driving have increased over the last ten years, whereas deaths from signalized intersections have increased over the previous twenty years. Over the last few years, the 65 to 74 age range has ranked third in automobile fatalities and second in pedestrian deaths in Pennsylvania and beyond.
In addition, there has been a sharp increase in pedestrian fatalities across the country within the last ten years. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, there will be a 54% rise in pedestrian fatalities and a 13% increase in traffic deaths. While incidents involving pedestrians may occur everywhere, parking lots, sidewalks, and roads present a heightened danger. The increasing number of pedestrian accidents in our state underscores the necessity of educating victims about their legal rights and remedies.
Statistics concerning fatal car crashes are also showing a complicated reality. In fact, more than 500 of the over 32,000 annual fatal auto accidents nationwide occurred in New Jersey. Moreover, our state’s transportation authorities reported more than 276,000 auto accidents in New Jersey in a single recent year, injuring almost 60,000 individuals as a direct consequence.
