Deadly Pedestrian Accidents in Philadelphia
According to auto accident data collected for Pennsylvania between 2012 and 2020, an average of nearly 160 pedestrians died each year due to fatal pedestrian crashes in Pennsylvania. In Philadelphia, pedestrian fatalities are currently 1.98 deaths per 100,000 people.
In many cases, people die as a result of pedestrian crashes caused by negligence. There are a number of leading causes of fatal pedestrian accidents, and dark road conditions, distracted drivers, and drivers who fail to yield are all factors that can contribute. Dark road conditions can make it difficult to see pedestrians on the roadway, which can lead to collisions. This is especially true when pedestrians wear dark clothing while walking in the evening and early morning hours.
Distracted driving is also a major cause of pedestrian accidents; when drivers are distracted by their phones or other tasks, they’re more likely to miss seeing pedestrians or other vehicles in the intersection ahead. Drivers who fail to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians also continue to cause countless unnecessary deaths in our state.
