Springfield, PA (May 26, 2023) – A 12-year-old child was killed, and numerous others were injured when four vehicles collided on Interstate 90 on Monday afternoon, according to officers with the Springfield Police Department.
The incident occurred in a construction zone on westbound I-95 at around 2:30 p.m. Police say the crash occurred one mile west of the Girard Avenue off-ramp (Exit 9). Four eastbound vehicles (a van, a sedan, and a flatbed with a trailer) were involved in the collision.
As Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook stated, the incident may have occurred because of a traffic slowdown caused by an earlier accident. The 12-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The child’s mother was one of five persons carried by helicopter to the hospital.
A major backup of traffic plagued I-90 and other nearby routes for several hours due to the closure of the eastbound lanes of the interstate between West Springfield and the Girard Exit.
The roadway has since reopened, but SPD officers continue to investigate at this time.
