Mahwah, NJ (August 3, 2023) – Wednesday morning’s commute was interrupted by a major traffic jam on Route 17 when a collision between a tractor-trailer and a car released a load of lemons onto the roadway and ended in two victim injuries.
After the tractor-trailer accident on the northbound side of the highway, all lanes were closed for the better part of the day. A southbound Audi was also struck by the truck and its trailer, which detached around 10:00 a.m. that morning and spilled hundreds of lemons onto the highway.
According to the Mahwah Police Department, the driver was driving northbound when he felt the trailer weight move. In his effort to correct the shift, the trailer became dislodged and subsequently jacknifed onto the highway’s southbound lanes.
Both drivers were taken to nearby medical centers for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Mahwah Emergency Medical Services issued a warning about the overturned trailer and collision on Route 17 north, close to Mountainside Avenue.
MPD officers are still investigating in the interim and have not released additional details related to the cause of the incident.
Our thoughts are extended to the injured victims and their families in hopes of their full recovery.
