November 4, 2022

Philadelphia, PA (November 4, 2022) – A teenage driver hit and killed a 61-year-old man, reportedly while the man was walking his bicycle across the street in North Philadelphia, on Tuesday evening, police say.

The incident happened around 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 1, at the corner of North Broad Street and Susquehanna Avenue.

Police added that the force of the impact threw the victim some 200 feet, causing the man to sustain severe head trauma. Despite life-saving measures attempted by EMS crews, the man was pronounced dead at the site of the accident.

The 18-year-old driver stopped about a block away, and Philadelphia officers reported that the teen was cooperating.

Police also believe speed played a factor in the collision, though their investigation is ongoing at this time.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the deceased man.

Deadly Pedestrian Accidents in Philadelphia

When compared to those in automobiles, pedestrians on U.S. roadways and sidewalks have a far greater risk of injury or death. In this regard, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh stand out as two great examples. Cities and other densely populated locations in the Commonwealth are more prone to such incidents because of the increased foot traffic. According to government estimates and traffic experts, more than 140 pedestrians died in auto accidents throughout Pennsylvania in 2020.
