Pemberton, NJ (May 12, 2022) – One person was killed while another victim sustained serious injuries in a crash that took place in Burlington County early Tuesday morning, May 10.
The driver of a pickup truck died at the scene, and a second motorist was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic County, after a five-vehicle wreck occurred around 6:45 a.m. Dispatchers alerted police that the major car accident happened on Route 70, near its intersection with Spring Lake Boulevard, in Pemberton Township.
The deceased victim, described only as a 28-year-old man from Browns Mills, died before he could be transferred to a hospital. The other victim, a 51-year-old man from Brick Township, remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition.
The other three motorists were not seriously hurt but were evaluated by medics onscene as a precaution.
Anyone who may have witnessed this crash is urged to call Patrolman Joshua Mann as soon as possible.
At this time, we would like to express our heartfelt sympathies to the deceased man’s family. In the hopes of a full recovery, our sincere thoughts go out to those hurt in this incident.
Vehicle Accident Fatalities in New Jersey
Despite the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, including fewer motorists on our state’s roads, New Jersey had close to 700 people die in traffic collisions in 2021 alone, the highest level since 2007 and an increase for the third year in a row.
State Police figures indicate that 690 persons were killed in New Jersey in 660 collisions last year, approximately 103 more than recorded in 2020. The number of pedestrians who died increased to 218 last year, up from 79 in 2020, while 23 bicyclists lost their lives in collisions last year, up from 5 in 2020.
Regrettably, these surges in highway deaths are comparable to national patterns documented by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration when it announced its first-half fatality figures for the year. In fact, the NHTSA announced that more than 20,150 people passed away as a result of motor vehicle accidents in the first half of 2021 alone. This marks a nearly 19% rise when compared to the same time frame in 2020, and also represents a 15-year high.
