Bear Creek Township, PA (September 6, 2023) – On Wednesday, a school bus and a tow truck collided in Luzerne County, sending several students and adults to the hospital.
The accident took place on Route 115 (Bear Creek Boulevard) close to Laurel Run Road at about 8:10 a.m. in the morning.
According to the Pennsylvania State Police, there were students from Kindergarten to Eighth Grade aboard the bus. The students were making their way to Bear Creek Community Charter for the start of the school year.
Officials suspect that a tow truck driver had a medical emergency while behind the wheel, forcing him to veer over the roadway and into the bus. After paramedics responded, Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center reportedly received and treated 54 accident victims on Wednesday morning.
Per a notice released by Bear Creek Community Charter School, four students suffered moderate injuries and were hospitalized; two of them are still being treated.
Both drivers were taken to the hospital, a man in his twenties from Effort and a woman in her fifties from Wilkes-Barre. One is in good condition, while the other is listed as fair by Geisinger representatives.
Route 115 was blocked between Laurel Run Road and East Mountain Boulevard for the investigation, which remains ongoing at this time.
Our thoughts are extended to the injured victims and their families in hopes of their full recovery.
