Dauphin County, PA (October 17, 2023) – Several accidents, one fatal and one involving a tractor-trailer carrying cooking oil, caused the closure of southbound Interstate 83 in Dauphin County near Exit 47 for more than seven hours on Monday.
A spokeswoman for PennDOT said that just before 7:00 a.m., a tractor-trailer and several other cars collided with a disabled vehicle parked in the left lane near mile marker 46.5.
According to officials, the collision resulted in cartons of cooking oil falling off the tractor-trailer and leaking oil into the road. Several cars then plowed into the truck’s trailer as a result.
Pennsylvania State Police said that a 41-year-old man was killed after his car collided with the trailer, which had stopped in the left lane due to the congestion. PennDOT said the accident occurred just before 9:00 a.m. at mile marker 50.
Two other passenger cars were involved in the collision. PennDOT recorded injuries, although they did not release specific details. An investigation is ongoing in the meantime.
