Egg Harbor Township, NJ (July 19, 2023) – On Monday evening, July 17th, a teenager was killed, and two others, including a police officer, were hurt, after two separate but related accidents in Egg Harbor Township.
A 19-year-old female was a passenger in a Honda Civic that was traveling south on the Garden State Parkway close to mile marker 64 in Egg Harbor Township at roughly 6:30 p.m. The driver of the Honda then lost control for unknown reasons, left the roadway, and tumbled down an embankment.
The victim was thrown from the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries. The driver’s injuries were not life-threatening.
Then, according to State Police, a local police officer who was headed to the scene of the wreck to help New Jersey State Troopers was involved in another collision nearby.
Around 7:20 p.m., a marked patrol car carrying the unnamed officer was struck by a Jeep Grand Cherokee as he attempted to pull into an authorized vehicle-only turnaround on the northbound side of the Parkway. The officer sustained minor injuries, though it’s unclear if the other driver was also hurt.
Between the two crashes, there were delays of nearly six hours on the southbound side of the Parkway traffic and about an hour for northbound traffic. Both accidents are still under investigation.
We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the deceased victim’s family. Our thoughts are extended to the injured victims and their families in hopes of their full recovery.
