Deaths in New Jersey Auto-Pedestrian Collisions
In recent years, a myriad of cities and various municipalities in New Jersey have introduced an array of rules and procedures to improve pedestrian safety, moves that traffic safety experts feel will be helpful in the long term.
The previous few months, however, have accounted for more than half of all pedestrian deaths in five North Jersey counties for the entire 12-month span of 2021. Coupled with a year-over-year increase in statewide statistics, it is evident that more must be done to safeguard the citizens of the Garden State.
Moreover, per the most recent New Jersey State Police records, our state ended 2021 with virtually the greatest number of pedestrian fatalities in more than three decades and the highest number of total traffic fatalities since 2007.
Adding insult to injury, statistics from the State Police indicate that, as of the end of December, the total number of road deaths in New Jersey pedestrian crashes was 672, surpassing both 2020 and 2019 as the most in recent memory. This is also the highest number of fatalities since 724 were reported in 2007.
