Hatfield Township, PA (July 1, 2023) – A teenager was hit and killed in a pedestrian accident that occurred on Route 309 in Montgomery County on Wednesday evening, June 28.
The incident apparently took place on Route 309 at the Colmar railway station in Hatfield Township at around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, according to township police.
Police say the victim, described only as a male teen, was trying to cross Route 309 when he was struck by a northbound vehicle. The boy was rushed to an area hospital but passed away shortly after his arrival. Neither his identity nor his age was disclosed by authorities.
After the collision, police shut down Route 309 for several hours. The roadway reopened early Thursday morning, but investigators are continuing their inquiry in the meantime.
Officers with the Hatfield Police Department asked any witnesses or those with information about the collision to contact them immediately.
We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the deceased child’s family.
Pedestrian Deaths Reported in Pennsylvania
The grim statistics on pedestrian accidents in Pennsylvania show that the problem is becoming worse every year. Indeed, since 2019, there has been a 21% rise in the number of pedestrian deaths in Pennsylvania.
Moreover, the number of pedestrian fatalities throughout the country has risen dramatically during the last decade. Preliminary data from the Governors Highway Safety Association shows a 13% increase in traffic-related fatalities between 2010 and 2020, with a 54% rise in pedestrian fatalities over the same time frame.
Accidents involving pedestrians may happen everywhere, including sidewalks, crosswalks, and parking lots. It goes without saying that pedestrians in our state who are seriously injured in vehicle accidents should be familiar with the law and their legal rights.
