North Plainfield, NJ (February 18, 2026) – Four people were taken to the hospital after a two-vehicle crash on Monday night, February 16, on Route 22 in North Plainfield. The collision happened just before 10 p.m. near the intersection of Wilson Avenue.
Police reported that a 50-year-old woman from Staten Island was driving a Nissan Xterra when she allegedly ran a red light and made an illegal left turn to cross Route 22. The SUV then collided with a Ford Explorer driven by a 20-year-old North Plainfield woman who was traveling eastbound.
According to investigators, the impact pushed the Xterra into the westbound lanes of the highway. The crash caused significant damage to both vehicles.
Emergency crews responded to the scene and worked to rescue the driver and passenger, who were trapped inside the Xterra. Officials said the vehicle was stabilized and the occupants were freed within minutes.
Four people were treated at the scene by first responders before being transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick for further care.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
We hope those injured recover fully.
How Red-Light Violations Lead to Serious Intersection Crashes in New Jersey
Running a red light is one of the leading causes of intersection accidents across the country. Traffic signals are designed to control the flow of vehicles and reduce conflicts at busy crossings. When a driver ignores a signal or attempts an illegal turn, the risk of a high-impact collision increases significantly.
Crashes at major highways like Route 22 can be especially dangerous because vehicles often travel at higher speeds. Injuries in these accidents may include broken bones, head trauma, internal injuries, and neck or back strain. Some victims require emergency transport and extended medical treatment.
After a serious intersection crash, people often have questions about medical expenses, insurance coverage, and lost income. Keeping records from emergency responders, hospital visits, and vehicle repairs can help organize the recovery process. Understanding how fault is determined in red-light accidents may also be important.
A personal injury lawyer can review the details of a collision and explain what legal options may be available. Legal guidance can help clarify how insurance claims work and whether certain types of compensation may apply based on the specific facts.
