Pedestrian Accidents in Philadelphia
The severity of pedestrian accidents has been steadily increasing, according to statistics collected in Pennsylvania each year. While fatalities on America’s roads were down in 2016, there was an increase in the number of different kinds of accidents. The number of deaths at signalized junctions has increased by 20 years, while the number of deaths caused by distracted driving and head-on collisions has increased throughout the last 10 years. When it comes to both pedestrian and motorist deaths over the last two decades, persons aged 65 to 74 have ranked second and third, respectively.
Moreover, the number of pedestrian deaths nationwide has risen dramatically during the last decade. Governors Highway Safety Association estimates that between 2010 and 2020, the overall number of road deaths will increase by 13%, while the number of pedestrian fatalities will increase by 54%.
While incidents involving pedestrians are theoretically possible everywhere, they tend to happen on sidewalks, crosswalks, and parking lots. The high rate of pedestrian accidents in our state necessitates that those who are seriously hurt in such incidents be made aware of their rights.
