Philadelphia, PA (April 9, 2022) – Around 12:30 a.m. on Friday morning, a driver was killed in a fatal car accident in Philadelphia. The victim of the accident has since been identified by police.
According to Philadelphia Police, the accident happened in the southbound lanes of I-95 around the area of Front Street and Broad Street. A tire flew off of a pickup truck that was traveling on the highway and bounced against the median. It then struck the windshield of a car that was traveling southbound, trapping them inside and causing them to crash.
Paramedics and several other responders were immediately dispatched to the scene. The victim inside the struck vehicle was trapped inside their car and had to be extricated by fire crews. They were transported to Jefferson University Hospital and pronounced dead while there. The victim has since been identified as a 37-year-old man from Upper Darby who has three children and worked as an Uber driver.
The driver of the pickup truck was not injured and remained at the scene. It is not known if they would face any charges.
The roadway was blocked in several lanes as police worked to clear the scene.
No further details have been released but the investigation continues. Police will update with more information as it is available.
