York County, PA (April 17, 2024) – On Wednesday morning in York County, three construction laborers were hit and killed in an active work zone along a local highway, according to the Pennsylvania State Police.
The accident occurred near Harrisburg, around mile marker 35.5 on southbound I-83 in Fairview Township. The police reported the accident just before 3:30 a.m. Per PSP troopers, a 24-year-old man was driving a box truck when it veered onto the shoulder and collided with a construction vehicle. The truck continued along the shoulder before hitting three employees.
It’s unclear if the driver remained at the scene, but all three workers were pronounced dead before they could be taken to a hospital. The police investigated the collision for several hours and shut down the highway as they completed their on-scene inquiry, but no further details have been reported.
We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased victims.
Pedestrian Accidents in Pennsylvania
In Pennsylvania, pedestrians do not always have the right of way. Drivers, however, must do everything they can to prevent a pedestrian accident, so they are often at fault when a pedestrian is injured.

A driver’s responsibilities include obeying the speed limit, yielding to pedestrians at intersections and in crosswalks, being aware of their surroundings, and using their turn signals. Drivers must also exercise due care when driving around or near pedestrians who seem confused, lost, impaired, disoriented, intoxicated, or disabled.
While driver negligence is the source of many pedestrian accidents in Pennsylvania, remember that pedestrians must be cautious when near the road. Pennsylvania pedestrian accident lawyers can investigate your accident, gather relevant evidence, and identify all liable parties, which, in most cases, is the negligent, reckless, or malicious driver who caused your injuries.

Given the serious nature of their injuries after being struck by 4,000 pounds of metal, pedestrians often require emergency medical care and extensive, ongoing treatments. These are accompanied by a seemingly insurmountable pile of medical bills and other associated expenses. Their situation is much more frustrating when they cannot return to work and earn a living for weeks, months, or possibly even years. By bringing an injury claim against the at-fault driver, we can ensure that you are fairly compensated for your injuries and other damages.
Although every pedestrian accident occurs under a unique set of circumstances, some damages that are commonly recoverable include:
- Current and anticipated medical bills
- Emergency medical care
- Pain and suffering, including mental anguish
- Lost wages, including future wages
- Diminished or lost earning capacity due to impairment or disability
- In-home care and assistance
- Therapy or counseling
- Depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other mental health conditions arising from the accident
