Philadelphia, PA (July 17, 2023) – On Saturday evening, July 15, a woman was killed, and her child was seriously injured when four cars collided in the Somerton area of the city and caused a secondary pedestrian crash.
The woman, a 32-year-old from Florida, died as a result of the incident, which took place near the junction of Bustleton Avenue and Rennard Street at about 8:00 p.m. on Saturday night.
The accident occurred when a Mercedes Benz driven by a 21-year-old male speeding south on Bustleton Avenue collided with a Hyundai driven by a 43-year-old man after the Mercedes Benz driver ran a red light.
According to an initial investigation by Philadelphia authorities, the force of the accident led the Hyundai to crash into two other vehicles, another Mercedes-Benz driven by a 40-year-old man and a Nissan operated by a 57-year-old woman.
Following the initial wreck, the Hyundai went onto the sidewalk, striking the victim and her child.
Officials said that first responders pronounced the woman dead at the scene, and the child was sent to a neighboring hospital in life-threatening condition.
Per authorities, the Hyundai’s driver is in critical but stable condition, while the other drivers involved only suffered minor injuries.
Officials have not released any further information regarding the crash. However, an investigation remains active at this time.
We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the deceased woman’s family. Our thoughts go out to the injured victim and their loved ones. We hope for their full recovery.
