Bristol Township, PA (December 24, 2025) – A devastating explosion at a Bucks County nursing home on Tuesday afternoon, December 22, has resulted in multiple fatalities and prompted an extensive search-and-rescue operation, according to local officials and state authorities. The incident occurred at the Bristol Health and Rehab Center, also known as the Silver Lake Nursing Home, located on Tower Road in Bristol Township.
Utility crews were dispatched to the facility shortly after 2:00 p.m. after reports of a gas odor inside the building. While crews were on site and actively evaluating the situation, an explosion occurred within the nursing home. In response, natural gas and electric service to the facility were immediately shut off to protect first responders and nearby residents.
State officials addressed the incident during a press briefing later that afternoon, stating that preliminary findings indicate a gas leak may have been responsible for the explosion. Authorities confirmed that at least two people have died as a result of the incident and that several individuals remain unaccounted for as emergency operations continue.
The Bristol Health and Rehab Center is a licensed nursing facility with 174 certified beds, typically housing approximately 151 residents each day. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they encountered extensive structural damage. Reports indicated that a major collapse had occurred, with portions of the first floor having fallen into the basement, trapping individuals within the structure.
Local officials issued a local emergency declaration following the explosion. Authorities reported that residents were rescued through windows and doors and, in some cases, from stairwells and elevator shafts. Firefighters also noted a strong odor of natural gas while conducting rescue efforts.
Officials stated that approximately 15 to 30 seconds after firefighters exited the building due to the heavy gas odor, a secondary explosion and fire occurred. Fire crews were able to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further, which also helped identify the suspected source of the gas leak in the basement of the facility.
Our deepest condolences go out to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this tragic incident.
Nursing Home Explosions and Serious Injury Claims in Pennsylvania
Explosions at nursing homes and assisted living facilities can have catastrophic consequences due to the vulnerable populations they serve. Residents often have limited mobility and depend on staff and infrastructure to ensure their safety. When a gas leak or similar hazard occurs, the risk of fatal injuries, severe burns, traumatic brain injuries, internal organ damage, and crush injuries increases significantly.
Common causes of explosions in residential and medical care facilities may include gas line failures, improper maintenance, aging infrastructure, or inadequate safety inspections. When structural collapse occurs, injuries may also include fractures, spinal cord injuries, and long-term respiratory complications caused by smoke inhalation.
Victims and families affected by incidents of this nature may face substantial financial and emotional burdens. Damages that may be pursued through a legal claim can include medical expenses, future medical care, rehabilitation costs, funeral and burial expenses, lost income, loss of companionship, and pain and suffering. In fatal cases, surviving family members may be entitled to pursue wrongful death claims under Pennsylvania law.
When an incident involves ongoing investigations, questions of liability, or recent changes in facility ownership, legal guidance can play a critical role in helping families understand their rights and options. Claims may involve multiple parties, including facility operators, maintenance contractors, or utility providers.
