Camp Hill, PA (December 28, 2024) – Multiple PennDOT employees were taken to the hospital following a multi-vehicle crash in Cumberland County that caused a lane closure on Friday afternoon, December 27.
The multi-vehicle crash had the right lane shut down on State Highway 581 eastbound just past the Trindle Road on-ramp before 2:00 p.m., a spokesperson for PennDOT said. Three PennDOT employees were taken to the hospital to be checked out after a crew cab was involved in a chain-reaction crash that happened when traffic was stopped, the spokesperson added.
Passengers in the other vehicles that were involved had to be pulled from their vehicles and also taken to the hospital. Meanwhile, officers are handling the active inquiry but have not released additional details. Witnesses were asked to step forward as soon as possible in the meantime.
Our thoughts go out to the injured victims and their family members in hopes of their complete recovery.
Motor Vehicle Accidents in Philadelphia
The vast majority of people automatically associate deadly car accidents with those that occur at high speeds on the highway. However, this is not always the case. According to research conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the number of people killed in car accidents on typical city streets has risen dramatically in recent years.

Unfortunately, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia are not immune to this trend. More than 1,000 people were killed in traffic accidents throughout Pennsylvania over one recent, as was reported by the state’s transportation agency, showing that this grim trend is an unfortunate reality in our state. Moreover, these crashes range from simple fender benders to devastating multi-car pileups and are even worse when they involve large trucks. Some of the most common causes of crashes reported in the Commonwealth include but are not limited to the following:
- Hitting a building, stationary item, or parked vehicle.
- Crashing into another vehicle at an angle (often while merging or running a red light).
- Back-to-back or rear-end collisions.
Even if you are one of the safest drivers around, you will probably be involved in a car accident at some time in your life due to the rising frequency of crashes. Because of this, you should prepare for an accident by familiarizing yourself in advance with the steps you need to take to protect yourself legally and financially after a car accident. Adding insult to injury, if a victim is left unable to work as a result of injuries sustained in a vehicle accident, the at-fault driver’s insurance company may attempt to avoid paying for the policyholder’s long-term care, as well as lost income and future earnings.
