Delaware County, PA (September 15, 2025) – Two Pennsylvania State Police troopers sustained injuries after their cruiser was struck during a pursuit involving a stolen vehicle on Interstate 95 in Delaware County. The crash occurred in the early morning hours of Saturday, September 13, according to the Pennsylvania State Police.
The incident began shortly after 1:28 a.m. when troopers from the Media barracks conducted a traffic stop on I-95 south near mile marker 10 in Tinicum Township. During that stop, a red Subaru Impreza passed the area and was flagged as stolen through the police database system. Troopers shifted their focus to the stolen vehicle and initiated a stop near mile marker 7.9 in Ridley Township.
Authorities stated that the driver initially pulled over but then fled as troopers approached. A pursuit ensued southbound on I-95, during which spike strips were deployed successfully, deflating the vehicle’s front passenger-side tire. Despite the damage, the Subaru continued another half-mile before colliding with the rear of a marked state police cruiser near mile marker 3.4, causing damage to both vehicles.
The driver, identified as Claren Thomas, resisted arrest before being taken into custody. The passenger, identified as Myron Bell, was apprehended without incident. Investigators reported that two firearms were recovered from inside the stolen Subaru, including one that had been illegally modified with an automatic “switch.”
Emergency medical services transported both injured troopers to Christiana Hospital in Delaware for treatment. They were later released after receiving care for their injuries.
Our thoughts are with the injured troopers, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery.
Crashes Involving Police Pursuits in Pennsylvania
Crashes that occur during high-speed police pursuits present heightened risks for both law enforcement officers and the public. Officers engaged in these pursuits face unpredictable hazards, including sudden vehicle maneuvers, armed suspects, and collisions caused by drivers attempting to evade capture. The added danger of stolen vehicles often complicates matters, as suspects may act recklessly or attempt extreme measures to avoid arrest.
In this case, the recovery of firearms from the stolen vehicle further emphasizes the dangers officers encounter. Modified or illegally altered weapons significantly increase the potential for violence and place law enforcement personnel at even greater risk. Pursuits that result in collisions not only endanger officers but can also put nearby motorists in harm’s way.
Victims of crashes that occur during or because of police chases, including law enforcement officers themselves, may face medical bills, time away from work, and long-term recovery needs. Determining liability in these incidents involves examining the actions of the suspects, the condition of the vehicles involved, and the circumstances surrounding the pursuit.
