Hempfield Township, PA (August 1, 2025)— A Jeannette man riding a motorized bicycle was killed late Thursday evening, July 31, when a car struck him and fled the scene in Hempfield Township, according to information released by Westmoreland County Coroner Tim Carson.
The 19-year-old man was riding the bicycle westbound on College Avenue in Hempfield around 11:00 p.m. when he was hit by the driver of a Kia Rio. The collision happened near the intersection with North Greengate Road. Both the bicyclist and the driver were headed toward Jeannette.
Pennsylvania State Trooper Steve Limani said officers tracked down the driver of the car overnight and searched a home in Jeannette, though no charges were filed as of Friday in connection with the crash. The victim’s cause and manner of death were pending an autopsy. However, authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident at this time.
We extend our deepest condolences to the deceased man’s loved ones.
Pedestrian Accidents in Pennsylvania
Hit-and-run pedestrian accidents are a growing concern across Pennsylvania, particularly in dense urban areas like Philadelphia. These incidents are especially devastating because the at-fault driver often flees the scene, leaving injured pedestrians without immediate aid and families without answers. Unfortunately, many of these crashes result in severe or fatal injuries due to the pedestrian’s lack of protection.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), pedestrians are significantly more likely to suffer fatal injuries in traffic collisions than those inside vehicles. When the responsible driver disappears, it adds another layer of pain and frustration for the victim’s family, complicating the investigation and delaying justice.
Victims and their families often face an uphill battle in the aftermath of a hit-and-run. Insurance companies may dispute claims or delay payments, and proving fault without an identified driver can be difficult. Despite these challenges, you may still have legal options through uninsured motorist coverage, eyewitness accounts, surveillance footage, or other investigative tools.
The emotional and financial toll of a hit-and-run pedestrian accident can be overwhelming. Families are often left to cope with unexpected funeral costs, loss of income, medical bills, and the lingering trauma of unanswered questions. In such heartbreaking moments, it’s important to know that help is available.
