Causes of New Jersey Bicycle Accidents

Mansfield, NJ - Six-Year-Old Struck, Injured by Horse Trailer on Mount Pleasant Rd

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that accidents involving bicycles made up more than 2% of all accident-related injuries in the United States in 2014. In that same year, more than 720 bicycle riders were killed in collisions with motor vehicles.

Bike accidents often happen when drivers operate their vehicles irresponsibly, exceed the posted speed limit, fail to be aware of their surroundings, and drive while they are distracted.

There are, however, a few causes of bike accidents involving motor vehicles that are more frequently documented than others. These include:

  • Right-cross collisions: These occur when a car is exiting an alley, side street, parking lot, or driveway on the righthand side of a cyclist. The rider then is then hit as they pass in front of the car or if a driver pulls out too quickly and the cyclist does not have time to react and avoid the collision
  • Right-hook collisions: This kind of crash takes place when a car passes the cyclist on its lefthand side and then makes a righthand turn in front of them. The rider is then hit by or unable to avoid crashing into the vehicle.
  • Rear-end collisions: This incredibly common kind of bicycle crash happens when a car strikes the rider from behind. Bicyclists usually sustain severe injuries and are in danger of being run over by the negligent driver.
