Pedestrian Fatalities in New Jersey
According to the most recent available accident statistics, a pedestrian was killed in a traffic collision in New Jersey 27% of the time over the last year alone. Tragically, any pedestrian in New Jersey who is out for a stroll risks being in a collision, but some age groups see more traffic-related fatalities than others. For instance, adults over 65 make up about 20% of all pedestrian accident fatalities. Moreover, New Jersey ranked among the most dangerous states for pedestrian deaths and injuries.
Unfortunately, the busy streets in New Jersey threaten pedestrians’ safety, so the state has passed several laws that drivers must abide by to keep pedestrians safe. Drivers who break these prohibitions may be subject to civil and criminal penalties, particularly if a pedestrian is hurt. Moreover, motorists in New Jersey have a duty of care to pedestrians, and when they fail to uphold this civil responsibility to others, it thus follows that they may be held civilly accountable.
Although pedestrians frequently sustain injuries in accidents, you have the right to use the road safely as a pedestrian in New Jersey. At any time and every intersection, pedestrians have the right to cross the roadway safely while walking on the sidewalk. Drivers are accountable for maintaining awareness of their surroundings and respectfully treating every other vehicle, including bicycles, trucks, and pedestrians.
