Philadelphia, PA (May 19, 2022) – A preschool-aged child was struck and seriously injured in a West Philadelphia pedestrian accident that took place on Thursday afternoon, May 19.
The 4-year-old boy was hit by the driver of an SUV, described only as a 46-year-old woman. She was reportedly driving a Gray Nissan Pathfinder and going westbound through the 6300 block of Lebanon Avenue when the incident took place, just after 4:00 p.m.
The child was immediately transferred to CHOP by ambulance and apparently suffered a left leg injury, as well as head trauma. Upon arrival at the hospital, the boy was placed in critical condition but later stabilized.
The driver was not injured in the incident and stayed at the scene to speak with authorities. It’s unclear if citations or charges will be issued, though Philadelphia Police said their investigation remains active at this time.
Our sincerest thoughts go out to the injured child and his family. We are hoping for his full recovery.
Injuries in Pennsylvania Pedestrian Accidents
On the roads and sidewalks of our country, pedestrians are often seen as being very defenseless and the most likely to be put in harm’s way. This is particularly apt in urban areas with high population densities, like Philadelphia or Pittsburgh. The largest metropolitan regions of the Commonwealth see thousands of people and bustling foot traffic every day, which makes occurrences like this all the more regular.
In 2020 alone, unfortunately, state officials and traffic researchers reported that 145 pedestrians were killed in Pennsylvania.
