Pedestrian Fatalities in Philadelphia
According to annual data compiled in Pennsylvania, the number and severity of pedestrian accidents have been rising. Although 2016 saw a decrease in deaths on American roadways, there was an increase in overall accidents. There has been a 20-year increase in fatalities at signalized intersections, whereas there has been a 10-year uptick in mortality due to inattentive driving and head-on crashes. Over the last two decades, those aged 65 to 74 have placed second and third, respectively, in terms of pedestrian and motorist fatalities.
In addition, there has been a sharp increase in the number of fatalities involving pedestrians throughout the country during the last decade. Between 2010 and 2020, the Governors Highway Safety Association predicts a 13% rise in traffic fatalities, with a 54% increase in pedestrian deaths.
Although pedestrian accidents may happen anywhere, they most often take place on streets, sidewalks, and parking lots. Due to the increasing number of pedestrian accidents in our state, it is important that victims of such accidents understand their legal options.
