Pedestrian Fatalities in Philadelphia
Regretfully, annual figures for Pennsylvania indicate a rise in the number and severity of pedestrian accidents. In 2016, there were fewer deaths on American roadways but more accidents overall. Moreover, fatalities from head-on crashes and inattentive driving have increased over the last ten years, whereas deaths from signalized intersections have increased over the previous twenty years. Over the last 20 years, the 65 to 74 age range has ranked third in automobile fatalities and second in pedestrian deaths in Pennsylvania and beyond.
In addition, within the last ten years, there has been a sharp increase in pedestrian fatalities across the country. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, there will be a 54% rise in pedestrian fatalities and a 13% increase in traffic deaths between 2010 and 2020.
While incidents involving pedestrians may occur everywhere, parking lots, sidewalks, and roads provide a heightened danger. The necessity to educate victims about their legal rights and remedies is underscored by the increasing number of pedestrian accidents in our state.
