Philadelphia, PA (May 6, 2023) – A driver who struck and killed a man on Thursday night in Philadelphia’s North Broad Street is still at large, and authorities are trying to track him down.
According to early findings, the incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. at the corner of Lehigh Avenue.
Officers with the Philadelphia Police Department say a 35-year-old victim was stuck and killed while crossing the road. A service station shared CCTV footage showing paramedics and firefighters racing to the incident.
Investigators said they located the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run at 8th Street and Cumberland Street, but the driver had already disappeared. The maroon Toyota SUV was reportedly abandoned in the middle of the road.
The passenger side front end was severely damaged, and the windshield was broken.
In the meantime, police have not released the identity of the 35-year-old victim. An investigation is ongoing, but witnesses who know anything were asked to get in touch with the authorities.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the deceased victim.
Fatal Pedestrian Crashes in Philadelphia
On average, between 2012 and 2020, 160 pedestrians a year perished as a result of traffic accidents in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia’s current pedestrian death rate is close to two per 100,000 people.
Accidents involving pedestrians frequently end in fatalities due to carelessness. Fatal pedestrian accidents can be caused by a number of factors, including inadequate lighting, inattentive drivers, and cars that fail to yield. Low visibility might make it more challenging to see pedestrians, increasing the risk of accidents. This is especially true for people who stroll around at night or very early in the morning wearing dark apparel.
It is more probable that drivers may crash into pedestrians or other vehicles at the next crossing if they are preoccupied with their phones or other tasks. Many pedestrians have lost their lives due to automobiles in our state who refuse to yield to them.
Losing a loved one in a car accident caused by someone else’s carelessness can be a devastating experience. Funeral expenses, lost wages, and other repercussions can be a major financial burden for families. If a family member was killed in a horrible car accident, a Philadelphia wrongful death attorney could assist you in seeking justice and financial compensation for your losses.
