Philadelphia, PA (March 28, 2023) – Early on Tuesday morning, Philadelphia officers were looking into a fatal hit-and-run accident in the southwestern part of the city.
According to investigators, a 65-year-old man driving a Nissan in the northbound lanes hit a 27-year-old man as he crossed Island Avenue.
The force of the collision caused the victim to be propelled into the southbound line, where, per the authorities, he was hit by another car. The first driver stayed on the scene, but the second motorist fled after hitting the man.
The victim suffered life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead at the site of the incident.
Officers are looking for the suspect and say they were traveling in a dark-hued or black vehicle. They were last seen traveling north on Island Avenue.
An investigation remains ongoing at this time, and no additional details have been released to the public.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the deceased woman.
Fatal Pedestrian Crashes in Philadelphia
Pennsylvania had an average of 160 pedestrian fatalities per year between 2012 and 2020, as indicated by data on such accidents. The fatality rate for pedestrians in Philadelphia is close to two per one hundred thousand people right now.
Accidents involving pedestrians frequently end in fatalities due to carelessness. Fatal pedestrian accidents can be caused by a number of factors, including inadequate lighting, inattentive drivers, and cars that fail to yield. It might be difficult to see pedestrians in poor light, which increases the risk of accidents. Those who wander around at night or very early in the morning while dressed in dark colors are particularly vulnerable.
Distracted motorists are less likely to see people crossing the street or other vehicles approaching an intersection. Many pedestrians have lost their lives due to automobiles in our state who refuse to yield to them.
Losing a loved one in a car accident caused by someone else’s carelessness can be a devastating experience. Funeral expenses, lost wages, and other repercussions can be a major financial burden for families.
