Philadelphia, PA (August 28, 2025)— According to authorities, two men were killed and a third remains in extremely critical condition after a crash on Roosevelt Boulevard on Thursday afternoon, August 28.
Investigators said a man driving a white van was traveling southbound in the outer lane of East Roosevelt Boulevard at Welsh Road around 2:00 p.m. when the vehicle struck two men walking in the area.
The van’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene by medics at 2:38 p.m. Both pedestrians were rushed to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital, where one man was pronounced dead at 2:49 p.m. The second victim remains hospitalized in extremely critical condition, police said.
The victims’ identities have not yet been released. The outer southbound lanes of Roosevelt Boulevard were closed for several hours while police investigated, but the roadway has since reopened. No further details were reported, though an investigation is ongoing, and witnesses were asked to step forward.
We offer our sincere condolences to the deceased victims’ family members. Our thoughts are with the injured victim in hopes of their full recovery.
Pedestrian Fatalities in Pennsylvania
Fatal pedestrian accidents remain a serious and persistent problem across Pennsylvania, particularly in high-traffic areas such as Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and their surrounding suburbs. Each year, pedestrians account for a disproportionately high number of roadway deaths compared to other types of traffic collisions.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), pedestrians face a much higher risk of fatal injury in crashes than vehicle occupants. With no protection against the impact of a car, truck, or bus, even a low-speed collision can prove deadly. Families are often left grappling with sudden grief while also facing overwhelming financial challenges, including funeral expenses, medical bills, and the loss of household income and support.
One of the greatest challenges in fatal pedestrian accident cases is establishing liability. Insurance companies often work aggressively to dispute fault or minimize payouts, leaving families at a disadvantage during an already devastating time. Taking immediate steps—such as securing the police report, gathering witness statements, preserving video footage, and documenting the crash scene—can greatly strengthen a wrongful death claim.
Under Pennsylvania law, surviving family members may pursue a wrongful death lawsuit when negligence causes a pedestrian’s death. Available damages may include funeral and burial costs, lost wages and benefits, loss of companionship, and compensation for the emotional suffering caused by the preventable loss. Prompt legal action is important, as the state imposes strict time limits for filing these claims.
