Washington County, PA (August 26, 2025)— A 46-year-old man was killed Monday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle while addressing a mechanical issue on his car along a busy roadway in Washington County, officials said.
According to Washington County Coroner Tim Warco, the victim had been operating a commercial truck and pulled over to the right of the fog line on the entrance ramp from U.S. Highway 22 to Interstate 576 to check a mechanical problem. While outside the truck, Everhart was hit by another vehicle.
Emergency crews responded to the scene before 4:00 p.m., where multiple first responders and a medical helicopter were visible. Warco said the driver involved did not remain at the scene, but a short distance away, aerial footage appeared to show another individual being taken into police custody.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission reported that by 6:30 p.m., the crash scene had been cleared and all lanes of the US-22 ramp to I-576 were reopened to traffic. The incident remains under investigation; however, no further details were reported.
We offer our sincere condolences to the deceased man’s family members.
Pedestrian Deaths in Pennsylvania
Deadly pedestrian accidents are a persistent problem across Pennsylvania, and some of the most devastating occur when individuals are struck while stopped on the side of the road. Whether a driver has pulled over due to a mechanical issue, a flat tire, or an emergency, the simple act of standing outside a vehicle places them at extreme risk.
High-speed traffic, distracted drivers, and poor visibility create dangerous conditions that make roadside crashes tragically common—and too often, fatal.
High-speed interstates and heavily traveled highways like the Pennsylvania Turnpike and I-95 are particularly hazardous for stopped motorists and pedestrians. Passing drivers may drift from their lane, fail to move over, or simply not see a person standing near a disabled vehicle. Even at lower speeds, the impact of a car or truck on an unprotected pedestrian can cause catastrophic or fatal injuries.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), pedestrians face a much higher risk of death in traffic accidents than vehicle occupants. Families who lose a loved one in a roadside crash are left dealing with unimaginable grief while also facing unexpected financial hardships such as funeral expenses, medical bills, and the loss of household income and support.

Proving liability in roadside pedestrian accidents can be complex. Insurance companies often dispute fault or attempt to minimize claims, especially if multiple vehicles are involved. Preserving evidence is critical—obtaining a police report, identifying witnesses, securing traffic camera or dashcam footage, and documenting the scene can make a significant difference in the outcome of a wrongful death claim.
Under Pennsylvania law, families may pursue a wrongful death lawsuit when negligence causes a fatal roadside pedestrian accident. Compensation can cover funeral and burial costs, lost wages and benefits, loss of companionship, and the emotional suffering caused by a preventable death.
