Philadelphia, PA (August 31, 2024) – On Friday evening, August 30, Philadelphia Police Department (PPD) officers reported that the driver of a stolen vehicle collided with two other motorists, causing a chain-reaction wreck in which another vehicle collided with a police cruiser.
The incident occurred just before 11:00 p.m., as officers were dispersing a large group of drivers along the 8600 block of Bustleton Avenue, according to the police. Shortly thereafter, officers discovered a 2020 Nissan Altima that had been reported stolen from Lower Moreland Township. The driver fled when officers attempted to stop the person, and they collided with a Chevy Malibu and a police vehicle after driving over a median on Roosevelt Boulevard.
Officers pursued the stolen Nissan Altima until it reached 9th Street and Erie Avenue, causing a chain-reaction collision that resulted in a Chevy Equinox hitting an unmarked police vehicle. Police reported that two individuals sustained injuries in the collision, one of whom was a Philadelphia police officer who was transported to the hospital with facial fractures and lacerations. The officer in question has since been released.
The driver of the Chevy Equinox was also transported to the hospital and is currently in stable condition. The PPD is currently soliciting public assistance to identify the driver of the stolen vehicle. No further details have been released, but an investigation remains ongoing in the interim.
Our thoughts are extended to the injured victims and their families in hopes of their full recovery.
Injury-Causing Crashes in Philadelphia
Each year, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation records over 104,000 accidents within the state of Pennsylvania, resulting in injuries to more than 61,000 individuals. Moreover, many accidents are entirely preventable. Acts of negligence continue to be the leading cause of accidental injuries or death in our state.
In Pennsylvania, there are many common causes of car accidents, almost all of which are caused by some sort of carelessness on the part of the driver or another party. The most frequent are driving under the influence, exceeding speed limits, and not obeying red lights and stop signs at intersections. Other common causes include reckless driving, crossing the center line, and making an improper turn. Other causes can include poor weather conditions or vehicle defects.
For instance, rear-end crashes are often the consequence of careless driving. These negligent drivers are responsible for most rear-end collisions in the state of Pennsylvania by running red lights and stop signs. In addition, determining who was at fault in an auto accident might be rather straightforward most of the time, but other times, it can be trickier than expected.
