Philadelphia, PA (January 23, 2026) – A fatal crash shut down northbound Interstate 95 for several hours on Friday morning, January 23, in Philadelphia’s Port Richmond section. The collision occurred around 12:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes just north of the Betsy Ross Bridge.
According to police, a black Nissan was navigating a curve when the driver lost control of the car. The vehicle struck a concrete barrier and a metal guardrail along the shoulder before hitting a utility pole and coming to rest down an embankment. The driver and one passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not been released.
Emergency crews responded to the area, and both PennDOT and PECO were called in to address hanging, live wires from the damaged utility pole. The highway remained closed for several hours while authorities conducted their investigation and completed safety-related work. All northbound lanes reopened around 6:00 a.m. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Our deepest sympathies go out to the families of the two deceased victims.
What Families Should Know After Fatal Crashes in Pennsylvania
When a loved one is killed in a motor vehicle accident in Pennsylvania, surviving family members may have options under Pennsylvania law to pursue a wrongful death or survival claim.
These claims may help address damages such as funeral and burial expenses, loss of financial support, loss of companionship, and pain and suffering experienced by the victim after the crash but before passing away. Determining liability typically involves reviewing crash reports, vehicle damage, roadway conditions, witness statements, and any available video or data related to the incident.
High-speed crashes on major highways can involve complex factors, including road design, vehicle performance, and driver behavior. Insurance companies may begin investigating immediately and may reach out to families early in the process. Having clear information and legal guidance can help families understand their rights and avoid being pressured into decisions before all facts are known.
Pennsylvania law also places strict deadlines on filing fatal accident claims, making timely action important. While no legal process can replace a loved one, pursuing accountability may help families find answers and secure financial stability during a difficult period.
If you have lost a loved one in a fatal crash in Philadelphia or elsewhere in Pennsylvania, speaking with a wrongful accident lawyer can help clarify your options and guide you through the process with care and experience.
