Philadelphia, PA (January 23, 2026) – A fatal crash shut down northbound Interstate 95 for several hours on Friday morning, January 23, in Philadelphia’s Port Richmond section. The collision occurred around 12:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes just north of the Betsy Ross Bridge.
According to police, a black Nissan was navigating a curve when the driver lost control of the car. The vehicle struck a concrete barrier and a metal guardrail along the shoulder before hitting a utility pole and coming to rest down an embankment. The driver and one passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not been released.
Emergency crews responded to the area, and both PennDOT and PECO were called in to address hanging, live wires from the damaged utility pole. The highway remained closed for several hours while authorities conducted their investigation and completed safety-related work. All northbound lanes reopened around 6:00 a.m. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
