Philadelphia, PA (August 18, 2022) – A woman died after being hit by a SEPTA bus on Wednesday evening, August 17, according to Philadelphia police.
It occurred about 9:20 p.m. on the 100 block of West Walnut Lane near Greene Street in the Germantown neighborhood of the city. The 71-year-old victim was crossing Greene at the southbound crosswalk, according to the police.
A SEPTA bus piloted by a 63-year-old man was in the travel lane at the time, dropping off passengers, according to authorities. The bus driver was traveling east on Walnut Lane when he struck the woman with the front passenger-side corner, causing her to tumble to the ground. According to the police, she was pulled from the intersection after being struck.
According to investigators, the 63SEPTA bus driver stopped and pulled over. The Philadelphia Fire Department and other first responders discovered the woman motionless on the highway. CPR was administered on the site. The woman was then transported to Einstein Medical Center, where she was declared deceased.
Witnesses at the scene of the crime gave police conflicting testimonies. Some stated another car may have struck the man before the SEPTA bus and then fled the scene, while others said they believe the SEPTA bus was the only vehicle involved. Later, police determined that the woman had not been struck by a fleeing vehicle previous to being struck by the SEPTA bus.
Investigators have collected footage from the SEPTA bus and are currently working to determine the sequence of events.
We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the relatives of the victim.
