Philadelphia, PA (August 9, 2024) – A 59-year-old woman was struck and killed while crossing the street in Philadelphia’s Logan neighborhood just after midnight on Thursday morning, August 8.
According to officers with the Philadelphia Police Department, the incident happened around midnight Thursday in the 5800 block of North Broad Street. Police say she had just left a convenience store nearby and was pronounced dead at the scene shortly thereafter. Investigators said that the 30-year-old driver stopped and cooperated with the authorities, but it is not yet clear what led to the crash. In this regard, an investigation is still ongoing and more updates will be published as new information becomes available. Philadelphia-area law enforcement officials asked any witnesses to step forward.
We extend our deepest condolences to the deceased woman’s family.
Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in Philadelphia
Tragically, annual figures for Pennsylvania indicate a rise in the number and severity of pedestrian accidents. Moreover, fatalities from head-on crashes and inattentive driving have increased over the last ten years, whereas deaths from signalized intersections have increased over the previous twenty years. Over the last few years, the 65 to 74 age range has ranked third in automobile fatalities and second in pedestrian deaths in Pennsylvania and beyond.
In addition, there has been a sharp increase in pedestrian fatalities across the country within the last ten years. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, there may be a 50% rise in pedestrian fatalities and at least a 10% increase overall in traffic deaths based on future projections. Furthermore, while incidents involving pedestrians can occur anywhere, parking lots, sidewalks, and city streets present a heightened danger. The increasing number of pedestrian accidents in our state underscores the necessity of educating victims about their legal rights and remedies.
Unsafe, reckless driving is a common contributor to the occurrence of these accidents. Drivers behind the wheel who do not pay attention to their surroundings and traffic signals are the most common cause of major collisions in the state of Pennsylvania, particularly those involving pedestrians. In most cases, it is relatively simple to determine who is at fault in a pedestrian accident (the vehicle), but there are other situations when the situation may be more unclear.
