Villanova, PA (February 23, 2022) – Two workers were injured in a trench collapse that took place in Villanova on Wednesday morning, February 23.
Officials confirmed that the accident happened around 11:30 a.m. at a home that is under construction on Mount Pleasant Road. Two workers were inside a trench when it collapsed due to reasons that are not fully understood. The two workers were trapped almost all the way up to their chests. One of the workers was going in and out of consciousness so crews worked quickly to free them.
Several responders, including the Lower Merion Township Fire Department, responded to the accident. Fire crews rescued both workers from the trench and said that they were lucky to be alive after the severity of the accident. Both of the workers were breathing upon rescue. The unidentified victims were taken to Lankenau Hospital and are expected to recover.
Police believe that the trench collapse may have been caused by rain from the last few days in the area. However, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating to find out if any workplace violations took place.
