Woodbury, NJ (January 13, 2022) – Around 4 a.m. on Thursday morning, January 13, a house fire broke out in Woodbury that took the life of a victim.
Gloucester County officials reported that the fire broke out in a home on Tatum Street. The two-story home erupted in flames and smoke, even spreading to the homes next to it. The home was so badly burned that it collapsed at some point as fire crews were trying to put out the fire. Neighbors told fire crews that they believe that there was an explosion in the area before they saw the flames.
Numerous responders were dispatched to the scene to help those in need. A 54-year-old woman who was inside the home when it caught fire was pronounced dead at the scene. Several people were also injured including two men, a woman, and a 1-month-old baby. One of the men was flown to a burn unit due to severe injuries.
Due to the severity of the fire, the area was blocked off for a period of time. Fire crews did not bring the fire completely under control until approximately 6:30 a.m.
The investigation into the circumstances of the fire continues.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families in hopes of a full recovery.
Fatal Fires in New Jersey
House fires break out in the blink of an eye within the state of New Jersey. Every year in the entirety of the U.S., it is estimated that approximately 358,000 houses caught fire due to the reckless acts of others. In 2018, approximately 2.5 civilians were killed out of every 1,000 house fires. The truth is, many of these fires can be prevented but continue to happen due to the reckless acts of others. Some of the most severe injuries that stem from house fires include smoke inhalation and burn injuries. Though these injuries sometimes land victims in the hospital, they are also known for taking the lives of those involved when severe enough.
