Pedestrian Accidents in Philadelphia
Pedestrian accidents are a growing concern in Philadelphia, especially in busy neighborhoods like Kensington, where foot traffic is heavy.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), pedestrian fatalities have been on the rise in recent years. Pedestrians are often more vulnerable to serious injuries in crashes, as they do not have the protection of a vehicle.
Hit-and-run accidents, like this one, add an extra layer of distress for victims and their families. After the crash, the victim is left without information about the responsible driver, delaying medical treatment, insurance claims, and legal proceedings.
Hit-and-run crashes, especially those involving pedestrians, can cause a range of serious injuries, including:
- Head injuries: Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) from impacts with the vehicle or the ground.
- Spinal cord injuries: Damage to the spine can result in permanent paralysis or limited mobility.
- Broken bones: Fractures to limbs, ribs, or other areas of the body due to the force of impact.
- Internal injuries: Damage to internal organs, including the liver, lungs, or spleen, which may not be immediately visible.
- Soft tissue injuries: Sprains, strains, or other injuries to muscles and ligaments that can take time to heal.
In a pedestrian accident, especially a hit-and-run, victims and their families may receive compensation for medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
If authorities find the driver, the victim can pursue a personal injury claim against the responsible party. In case the driver remains unidentified, victims may still file a claim with their own insurance company under uninsured motorist coverage.
