Philadelphia, PA (July 16, 2026) โ A woman was left in critical condition Wednesday night, July 15, after being struck by a driver who fled the scene on southbound Interstate 95.
The wreck happened around 10:36 p.m. near the exit for the Walt Whitman Bridge. According to Pennsylvania State Police, the 37-year-old woman, of Clifton Heights, had lost control of her red Chrysler 300C and struck a median moments earlier, leaving her vehicle disabled in the left lane.
As she got out to check for damage, a driver heading southbound struck her and left the scene without stopping. She was thrown into the middle-right lane.
Emergency units closed the roadway for a period while working to clear the area, and she was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition. No description of the driver or vehicle has been released.
The search for the driver responsible continues, and the investigation remains ongoing.
We are thinking of the woman and her family as she fights to recover.
What Happens When a Hit-and-Run Driver Isn’t Found in Philadelphia, PA?
When a hit-and-run driver isn’t identified right away, a victim can still pursue compensation through their own uninsured motorist coverage, which Pennsylvania law requires insurers to offer as part of an auto policy.
Uninsured motorist coverage steps in specifically for situations like this one, where the at-fault driver cannot be identified or does not carry insurance. A person files a claim directly with their own insurance company rather than pursuing the fleeing driver, and the insurer then investigates the crash much like it would any other claim, reviewing police reports and evidence from the scene to determine what the policy will cover.
Damages in hit-and-run cases can include compensation for medical expenses, both immediate hospital care and any ongoing treatment or rehabilitation. A victim may also be able to recover lost income if the injuries kept them out of work, along with compensation for pain and suffering tied to the severity of the crash.
A Philadelphia personal injury lawyer can help a victim pursue a claim through uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage while also working with police to help identify the driver who fled. An attorney can also explain what types of compensation may be available for medical bills, lost wages, and other losses tied to the crash.
