Pedestrians Killed By Trains in Pennsylvania
Counted among the most vulnerable individuals on our state’s roadways, pedestrians are at much higher risk of life-altering and tragic consequences as a result of vehicle accidents. In fact, hundreds of pedestrians are killed in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania yearly due to the careless actions of others. Throughout 2020 alone, approximately 150 pedestrians died in Pennsylvania accidents.
As severe as these incidents are on the road, train accidents are even worse. The biggest contributor to railway fatalities, by far, pedestrian railroad accidents are unbelievably devastating. Since 1997, more than 7,000 pedestrians have been killed by trains throughout the United States. And in 2014, nearly 16 people died in train accidents weekly across the country, signifying a 17% rise over the previous year and the greatest number of rail fatalities in seven years, according to federal government data.
Though these deaths are relatively rare compared to other traffic crashes, more populous cities with bustling passenger train stations, like Philadelphia, see these incidents at a greater rate. Sadly, about 190 deaths were recorded in and around Philadelphia’s eight counties, totaling approximately 10 each year since 1997.
Regardless of the cause, however, losing a loved one in a deadly pedestrian accident is tragic. From leftover medical costs to sudden, exorbitant funerary expenses, the family members of deceased victims must traverse a stressful path
