Philadelphia, PA (March 16, 2023) – According to authorities, a woman was killed after being struck by two automobiles, including one whose driver fled the scene on Tuesday night.
At around 8:20 p.m., medics declared the woman dead near the junction of 49th Street and Lancaster Avenue. The victim was reportedly struck by a westbound white Mitsubishi traveling at a high rate of speed.
Once the Mitsubishi struck the woman, the force apparently ejected her into the eastbound lane, where she was struck by a second vehicle.
The second vehicle’s driver stayed at the site. The 58-year-old woman was partially pinned under the Nissan that struck her and then came to rest, said Scott Small, the chief inspector of the Philadelphia police.
Minutes after the incident, a white Mitsubishi was discovered near the 2000 block of Belmont Avenue in Fairmount Park, about two miles from the accident site, but the driver was not present.
Witnesses recognized this vehicle as the Mitsubishi that hit the victim.
The police are examining security footage from the area in an attempt to identify the driver, though there are currently no arrests.
An investigation remains ongoing
Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the deceased woman.
Deadly Pedestrian Accidents in Philadelphia
According to Pennsylvania pedestrian accident statistics gathered between 2012 and 2020, an average of 160 pedestrians per year died in fatal accidents in Pennsylvania. Sadly, Philadelphia’s current pedestrian fatality rate is 1.98 per 100,000 residents.
In many instances, pedestrian accidents caused by carelessness result in death. Many variables may contribute to deadly pedestrian accidents, including road conditions that are too dark, distracted drivers, and vehicles that fail to yield. It might be difficult to spot pedestrians in low-light settings, which can lead to crashes. This is particularly true when people wearing dark apparel stroll at night or early in the morning.
When drivers are preoccupied with their phones or other duties, they are more likely to fail to see pedestrians or other cars at the junction ahead. In our state, drivers who refuse to give the right-of-way to pedestrians continue to inflict many needless fatalities.

Often, burial fees, lost earning potential, and other consequences place a major financial strain on families.
