West Chester, PA (August 19, 2026) – Three people were taken to local hospitals on Tuesday, August 18, after an underground electrical fire caused smoke to spread through several properties on North Church Street.
West Chester Borough Fire Department, along with Good Fellowship Ambulance & EMS Training Institute and mutual aid companies were called to the 100 block of North Church Street around 12:27 p.m.
Crews found an underground transformer had caught fire, and it was sending smoke into nearby buildings and sparking a small electrical fire above ground.
Several additional people were checked by EMS on site but did not require hospital transport. PECO was called in to handle the electrical hazards, and crews checked surrounding properties for additional dangers while monitoring carbon monoxide levels throughout the afternoon. All units had cleared the block by 3:35 p.m.
The investigation into what caused the fire remains ongoing.
