Philadelphia, PA (August 20, 2026) – A woman was bitten by a German Shepherd Wednesday night, August 19, on the 2900 block of Ridge Avenue in Philadelphia’s 22nd District.
Philadelphia Fire Department medics arrived to find the woman with a bite wound to her left leg. Emergency units evaluated and treated her.
The dog is now under its owner’s control. What led to the bite remains under investigation.
We hope the injured woman recovers quickly and fully.
Does Pennsylvania Hold Dog Owners Strictly Liable for Bites?
Pennsylvania imposes strict liability on dog owners for certain damages, which means an owner can be responsible for a victim’s medical costs and lost income even without proving the owner was careless, as long as the dog wasn’t provoked and the victim wasn’t trespassing.
This differs from many other injury claims, where the injured person typically has to show the other party acted negligently.
Beyond medical costs, Pennsylvania law also allows an injured person to pursue additional damages, like pain and suffering, but only if they can show the dog had a history of aggressive behavior or that the owner was otherwise negligent, such as failing to properly restrain the animal.
This distinction matters because it can significantly affect how much compensation is available, and it usually requires digging into whether the dog had bitten or threatened anyone before.
Dog bite wounds can lead to lasting scarring, nerve damage, or infection, particularly when the bite is deep or located on a limb like the leg. Recovery sometimes involves multiple follow-up visits, and in more serious cases, reconstructive treatment.
Proving a dog’s prior behavior or an owner’s negligence can require gathering veterinary records, animal control history, or witness accounts, and a Philadelphia dog bite lawyer can play an important role in building that fuller picture once the basic facts of a bite are established.
