Philadelphia, PA (June 1, 2026) – A 74-year-old man was struck and killed late Saturday night, May 30, in South Philadelphia. Philadelphia Police said John McDermott was hit just after 10:30 p.m. on the 1100 block of South 11th Street.
A white Ford van lost control and struck a parked Chevrolet van, which then hit McDermott and a parked Land Rover. He became trapped in the wreckage. The two parked vehicles were unoccupied at the time.
The driver fled the scene but later turned himself in and was questioned before being released. No charges had been filed at the time of this report. Doorbell camera footage captured the moment of the crash and showed nearby residents rushing out to help.
McDermott was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He had been walking home with groceries at the time of the accident.
The Philadelphia Police’s Crash Investigation Division is continuing to look into what led to the wreck.
We extend our sincerest condolences to John McDermott’s family and to all who knew him.
What Legal Options Do Families Have After a Fatal Hit-and-Run in Philadelphia, PA?
When someone is killed in a hit-and-run collision in Pennsylvania, surviving family members may be eligible to pursue a wrongful death claim against the at-fault driver. Even when a driver is released pending further review, a civil case can move forward independently of any criminal proceedings. Pennsylvania’s wrongful death statute allows certain relatives to seek compensation for funeral expenses, lost financial support, and the loss of the person’s companionship. The statute of limitations for wrongful death claims in Pennsylvania is generally two years from the date of death.
South Philadelphia sees heavy pedestrian activity throughout the evening hours, particularly along busy corridors. The stretch of South 11th Street is a residential block typical of the area: narrow, parked cars lining both sides, and foot traffic from nearby housing. These conditions can make late-night driving hazardous.
Families who lose someone in a hit-and-run usually face uncertainty about whether compensation is even possible when a driver initially flees. A Philadelphia wrongful death attorney can help clarify whether the driver’s insurance, the victim’s own uninsured motorist coverage, or other sources may apply. Legal counsel can also help preserve doorbell camera footage, witness accounts, and other evidence before it becomes unavailable.
